The recent Gizmodo post on my photos spurred some comments about practical model effects vs. CGI. More precisely, should Star Wars VII be filmed with real models or not. Most, if not all, comments were very clear about this, it’s practical …models or no show. I have been a long time practical models devotee and to me there’s nothing more exciting than a spaceship filming model. Seriously, I love that stuff, I’ve never even doubted it’s superiority over CGI. However, after seeing Gravity I became convinced that CGI can, in skillful hands, be as good as practical models. The problem with CGI is the tendency to overdo it “because you can” (some of that happened in Gravity as well, IMO). If handled skillfully, not running around like a rabbit on acid, it can be a beautiful thing. I’m really looking forward to Star Wars VII, I’m sure it will look fantastic either way.
